Listen Imagine Compose began in 2010 as a series of action research projects and symposia that explored key questions around how composing was taught and learned in secondary schools.

This phase of work resulted in a major report by lead academic Professor Martin Fautley.

In 2014, the findings were drawn upon to devise Continuing Professional Development for secondary music teachers and this is now available as accredited course.

Listen Imagine Compose continues to develop through Away Days, research and a growing a body of evidence and good practice around composing in secondary schools.

Listen Imagine Compose

Listen Imagine Compose began as a series of action research projects and symposia culminating in a major report by lead academic Professor Martin Fautley

Phase One

Phase 1 comprised a series of symposia and six action research questions that look at six key projects.

Phase Two

A Continuing Professional Development course for secondary music teachers was piloted in Birmingham and London during the 2014/15 academic year.

Phase Three

The CPD is now available as an accredited course at Masters Level (Level 7). The first cohort began in the 2016/17 academic year, with teachers working towards a Masters in Teaching in Learning or a Masters in Educational Leadership.

Our Resources

The Listen Imagine Compose resources have been created over the course of the project to date. We continue to add to them.  They include reports, schemes of work, lesson plans, ideas from our Community of Practice and further reading.

They can be downloaded free of charge and adapted for use in your own classroom.
